2026: SUSTAINABLE FUEL FOR FLIGHTS FROM SINGAPORE
Flights departing from Singapore would be mandated to use sustainable aviation fuel from 2026, a move aimed at progressively decarbonizing airline operations.
However, travelers should also expect an increase in the price of air tickets, due to the levy imposed on the purchase of the fuel. Importantly, passengers in premium classes are expected to pay a higher levy.
This initiative was part of Singapore’s sustainable air hub blueprint, developed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). For starters, the target for 2026 is a 1 per cent sustainable aviation fuel uplift. Mainly directed at sending demand signals to fuel producers, in hopes that they will invest in more facilities, increasing the supply of sustainable fuel. By 2050, the goal is to achieve a net zero carbon emission in all domestic and international flights. Sustainable fuel is made from various feedstock and waste and can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent per lifecycle. However, it is also 3-5 times more expensive than conventional fossil jet fuel. Therefore, it is important that Singapore strikes a balance between economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability while working towards the objective of sustainable growth.
