The Bicycle: Design, History, and Innovation
In the preface to the book "RAGGI DI DESIGN: Bicycles Through Ingenuity, Art, and Innovation" by Paolo Carosini, presented at the Adi Design Museum on 28 November 2024, Alex Terzariol highlights the historic and extraordinary combination of technology, creativity, and emotion in the design and construction of bicycles.
Improving comfort and performance has been the challenge for designers, engineers, and mechanics since the first "velocipede" was created in 1817.
Terzariol references many examples of bicycles that have defined eras and become true cultural phenomena. Among these is the legendary Graziella, which became part of everyday life following the energy crisis of 1973, when people turned to two wheels for transportation. A symbol of Made in Italy, the Graziella even inspired the creation of the British Brompton!
The preface offers insights that encourage readers to dive into Carosini's book: from the mountain bikes of the 1980s to cutting-edge electric motors, from frames to components that have become mechanical masterpieces, and even a nod to environmental consciousness with the example of the Bamboo Bike Project, designed for the most challenging road conditions.
RAGGI DI DESIGN showcases around fifty extraordinary bicycles, part of Carosini’s priceless collection, which he has spent years researching, restoring, and bringing back to life.
Designing bicycles is every designer’s dream, as the writer and playwright William Saroyan once said: “The bicycle is the noblest invention of mankind.”
